Golf: Ikoyi ladies get Heineken boost

Heineken has been named as the official sponsor of the nation foremost women golf tournament, the Ikoyi Club Ladies Golf Open Championship, where over 100 amateur women golfers will tee off the 37th edition of the event on Thursday.

 According to the Lady Captain of Ikoyi Club 1938 (Golf Section), Mrs. Busola Joseph, who spoke in Lagos yesterday, the tournament will end on Friday with the various participants carting home many prizes. Lady golfers from different clubs around the country will feature, as well as guests (men) and lady golfers with handicap 0-36 showcasing their skills on the opening day, Joseph said. The final day is exclusively for ladies with handicap of 28 and below and this will be rounded off with a gala later in the day, she added. National Mirror learnt that Heineken had in the past sponsored the Nigeria Cup Golf Tournament which is the premium event for the sport in the country.

Senior Brand Manager Heineken, Jacqueline Van Faassen, who spoke on the occasion, reiterated the sponsor commitment to the ladies golf tournament, saying it was aimed at strengthening the women folk in the sport that was once an exclusive preserve of the men. Our effort is basically to reinforce the partnership between Heineken and a premium tournament like the Ikoyi Ladies Open, Van Fassen said.

Evelyn Oyome is the defending champion of the tournament that has also attracted sponsors that include American Express, South African Airlines, Mandilas, DHL, PZ, Chevron, First Bank, Total and Nestle, among others. A major highlight for the gross tournament, expected to attract players from clubs in Ikeja, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Abuja, Kano and Ghana, will be the Mandilasdonated Toyota Jeep for winner of hole-in-one for hole 4 of the 18- hole Ikoyi Club course.
